Mario Takes a Stroll

Ah, the vanilla contest. Basically make one level using only vanilla graphics and gameplay mechanics. They allow a lot of leniency in terms of vanilla, for example you can use custom music, which makes no sense to me, so I choose not to use it. I dunno, sometimes they are lenient and sometimes they are strict. Considering how only a handful of vanilla contests have taken place and the technology advances each year, it's hard to nail down bare basics anymore.

Anyway, this level has a story that starts out really peaceful, and turns into you having to rescue Yoshi. The level is probably the most story driven of anything I've done but, it still isn't much. Though the level design is great. I was working on Mario and the 5 Golden Eggs at the time so the palettes are beautiful and realistic, and the ground is really funky. I love it.
